A survey carried out by the Women Diplomats group shows that the situation of gender disparity has improved in the management of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, but remains well below the career average.
Although they represent 23% of diplomats, women head only 19 embassies, which represents 14.6% of the total.
In June 2022, the date of the group’s previous survey, there were 14 ambassadors, which shows a still timid advance.
But the increase took place relatively in better localities. Now there are two in type A posts, considered the most relevant — Bern and Stockholm, in Europe. There was also an increase in type C posts, from six to nine ambassadors.
The situation of disparity is repeated in other positions. Of the 217 posts abroad, which include consulates and vice-consulates, missions and offices, only 30 are headed by women, 13.8% of the total.
Mauro Vieira was pressured to correct the gender disparity in the category, because when he commanded the Itamaraty in the government of Dilma Rousseff (PT), he was the chancellor who least promoted women.
One of the nods made by the minister was to appoint the diplomat Maria Laura da Rocha secretary-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She is the first woman in history to hold the position – the second most important in the hierarchy of Brazilian diplomacy.
