Electoral judge Márcia Santos Capanema de Souza, from the 23rd Electoral Zone of Rio de Janeiro, determined this Thursday (13) the ineligibility for eight years of Marcelo Crivella (Republicans) for abuse of economic power in the 2020 election, when he ran for re-election to the mayoralty of Rio. Currently, Crivella is a federal deputy.

The parliamentarian’s defense will appeal the decision of the first instance and stressed that the sentence does not have immediate effect, reported the newspaper O Globo. The action was filed by the current mayor of Rio Eduardo Paes (PSD), who defeated Crivella in 2020. “Here you do it, here you pay! Lying and spreading fake news is a crime!” twitter.

The magistrate also determined the cancellation of Crivella’s mandate in the Chamber of Deputies. “In view of the mandate of Marcelo Bezerra Crivella, obtained in the 2022 elections, I also impose the penalty of revocation of his diploma as a Federal Deputy, under the terms of Complementary Law n.º 64/90, article 22, XIV”, says one part of the decision.

According to the decision, Crivella’s ticket would have distributed pamphlets claiming that Paes would support the legalization of drugs, abortion and the so-called “gay kit” in schools. The decision also covers Crivella’s runner-up, Army lieutenant colonel Andreia Firmo. She must return R$ 42,499.50 to the public coffers referring to the “production of 1,500,000 (one million, five hundred thousand) pamphlets that contained untrue information” about Eduardo Paes.
