The bodies of four children and four adults have already been rescued from houses hit by a landslide early this Monday (13) in Manaus. The tragedy was caused by a heavy rain that hit the Jorge Teixeira neighborhood, in the east zone of the Amazonian capital, which caused flooding and overflowing of creeks in the region on Sunday night (12).

According to the state government, there are still people missing. Governor Wilson Lima (União Brasil) said that the site “is difficult to access” and that 44 men from the Fire Department and Civil Defense were carrying out the searches. At least 11 houses were buried, but the city of Manaus did not disclose how many remain missing or were taken to municipal shelters.

Minister Waldez Góes, for Integration and Regional Development said he is in contact with Senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM), with the governor and with the mayor of Manaus, David Almeida (Avante), to align the execution of actions assistance to affected families.

“To align the prompt recognition of the state of emergency, the quick release of resources after the publication of the municipal decree and the dispatch of Civil Defense teams”, he said.

The release of resources and the dispatch of teams from the National Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense must take place after the publication of the municipal emergency decree.
