Eduardo Leite received BRL 200,000 as an employee of the PSDB – 05/11/2023 – Panel

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, received nearly R$200,000 as a PSDB employee last year, although he did not effectively provide services to the party.

The payments were made between July and December, a period when Leite had no steady income having resigned as governor in hopes of running for president.

With the national project unfeasible, he sought a new term at the head of the state executive, for which he was elected. Since February of this year, the governor has also been the national president of the PSDB, and has made it one of his missions to renew the party after successive defeats.

The practice of parties hiring leaders is not illegal and has already been adopted by other parties in the past, such as the PT. The solution was found by the toucans after an unsuccessful attempt by Leite to receive retirement as a former governor. He had to step back amid a barrage of criticism.

As the Panel found out, Leite did not work for the party. According to the PSDB’s rendering of accounts to the Electoral Justice, she received a gross salary of R$ 24,769. He was also entitled to R$8,525 of the thirteenth and another R$70,874 of severance pay in December, when he was already elected.

Toucans’ main bet to run for the Presidency in 2026, Leite was the only candidate in majority office who had this party privilege last year.

In a note, the PSDB advisory stated that Leite, “by making himself available to the PSDB to be a candidate for an unprecedented second term as governor of Rio Grande do Sul, exposed his need for subsistence to the party”.

The party says he was hired as a political adviser at a salary lower than that paid to a governor.

“Everything was done strictly complying with the legislation”, says the caption, which says it did not use resources from party and electoral funds, supplied with public money, to make payments to Leite.
