The horse Doutor Sureño, from Haras Moema, won this Sunday (7) the hundredth edition of the São Paulo Turf Grand Prix, held at the capital’s Jockey Club. The race, the most important in the state, was the trigger for a three-day event held by the association, with the distribution of R$ 1.3 million in prizes.
Doutor Sureño was ridden by jockey Marcos Ribeiro, 30. He has been racing at the São Paulo club for 15 years and won the traditional race for the first time. The horse’s owners received R$ 100,000 for the victory.
“It’s something that I can’t even explain because there was a lot of people’s expectation for this victory. We knew that the victory was possible, but we weren’t the main favorites”, said Ribeiro.
Doutor Sureño overcame, in the final stretch, the horse Não Dá Mais, which had come from England especially for the race.
The Jockey Club tried to attract a new audience, not exactly interested in racing. Booths were placed with free food, drinks and toys for children. But there were more traditional sectors. In one of the three restaurants on site, entry was only allowed to men in suits and ties and women in dresses.
It is estimated that 15,000 people passed through the site between Friday and Sunday.
