Coach leaves São Paulo after winning the Copa do Brasil
Dorival Júnior accepted the proposal from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and will be the new coach of the Brazilian team for the 2026 World Cup cycle.
The official announcement should only be made in the next few days, as the CBF is focused on saying goodbye to its idol Zagallo, who died at the age of 92.
CNN confirmed Dorival’s acceptance with sources close to the deal.
Dorival received guarantees from CBF
The coach even returned to São Paulo for the 2024 season on Saturday (6). Before accepting the invitation, he was apprehensive and sought guarantees that he would have job stability, amidst the political turmoil that the CBF is experiencing.
These guarantees arrived this Sunday and, therefore, Dorival has already said goodbye to São Paulo. He will have the freedom to set up his technical committee and security in the position.
It is even expected that the coach will participate in the selection of the next CBF Director of National Teams. Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the confederation, wants Filipe Luís, ex-Flamengo, who has a great relationship with Dorival, in the position.
Dorival arrives after Ancelotti’s “no”
Dorival Júnior will be the effective coach of the Seleção as successor to Tite, current coach of Flamengo, who led Brazil in the last two World Cups (2018 and 2022).
Between Tite’s departure and the agreement with Dorival, the CBF made use of two interim coaches: Ramon Menezes and Fernando Diniz, who led the Seleção in three and six matches, respectively.
There was an expectation that Diniz would continue in the role until the arrival of the Italian Carlo Ancelotti, in June 2024. The foreign coach, however, chose to renew with Real Madrid, which forced the CBF to change its plans.
Multi-champion with Flamengo and São Paulo
In the last two seasons, when he led Flamengo (in 2022) and São Paulo (2023), Dorival was champion of the Libertadores and two-time champion of the Copa do Brasil in consecutive editions.
At 61 years old, he leaves São Paulo to take over the Seleção after leading the São Paulo team in 54 matches, with 25 wins, 13 draws and 16 defeats.
