São Paulo agreed this Thursday (20) to hire coach Dorival Júnior, 60, who signed a commitment until the end of 2024. The coach replaces Rogério Ceni, 50, fired after a sequence of unconvincing performances by the tricolor team.
The São Paulo native from Araraquara has been free on the market since his departure from Flamengo at the end of last season. Even after winning the Copa do Brasil and Copa Libertadores, the red-black board opted to replace him with the Portuguese Vítor Pereira – a bet that proved to be wrong.
It will be Dorival’s second spell at the Morumbi club. And the second in which he arrives for Ceni’s vacancy. Hired in July 2017, he took the team out of the relegation zone of the Brazilian Championship, but did not go beyond that.
He ended up fired in March 2018, after a series of bad results and a defeat in the classic against Palmeiras. He left with 40 matches ahead of the Morumbi association, with 17 wins, 11 draws and 12 defeats, a 51.6% success rate. And he sought to leave doors open.
“I am satisfied with everything I received from São Paulo. It is a normal, commonplace fact”, he said at the time. “I tried to do my best in São Paulo. I think this is the way to go. There is reciprocity, and these are facts that we have to go through in life.”
The current tricolor president, Julio Casares, celebrated the reunion. “Our conversation with Dorival was frank and direct, which provided the opportunity for this quick adjustment. We are pleased to be able to count on him. He is a great professional”, he stated.
