Doctors Without Borders opens photographic exhibition ‘Ask Time’ in Manaus

Manaus (AM) — The interactive photographic exhibition “Ask Time”, promoted by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), will open from next Wednesday (13) until April 12, in Manaus. There are 12 remarkable records in the history of the organization, which has been offering healthcare to people in vulnerable situations for more than 50 years. In the exhibition, the public at Amazonas Shopping is challenged to say whether the image is old or current.

One of the records reveals an endless line made up of children, women and men with lost looks, in a place in Bangladesh. They are Rohingya refugees, who are fleeing violence in search of a better life. Next to the panel, the question: “What year is this image from? 1978 or 2018?”

To get the answer, visitors just need to point their cell phone at the QR Code available next to the images and access the videos and explanatory texts about the context of each humanitarian crisis.

In this case, the correct answer is 2018. Since the 1990s, more than a million Rohingya refugees have fled violence in their home community. Even after all these years, migration is still a problem faced by this population. Today, there are more than 800,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, the majority in Cox’s Bazar, the largest refugee camp in the world.

In another image, this one about the nutritional crisis, families wait for care in a medical tent in Afar, Ethiopia. Is the photo from 1986 or 2022? Whoever said 2022 was right. However, although the photo shows MSF’s testimony about a deadly nutritional crisis today, the country has been facing alarming levels of malnutrition for at least three decades.

With this look at time, the exhibition tries to provoke the public to reflect on the constant wars, conflicts, epidemics and catastrophes that affect the most vulnerable people. “MSF is more than 50 years old. A lot could have changed in all this time. But, in many places where we operate, we have the feeling that the situation has not changed much. There is still a lot to do”, explains Nira Torres, MSF Communications Director.

Amazonas Shopping Marketing Manager, Ivanna Passos, highlights that it is a pleasure for the shopping center to host the exhibition and offer visitors the opportunity to reflect on the situations presented and learn a little more about the work carried out by Doctors Without Borders in areas where the past seems to be confused with the present, and where the organization brings healthcare to the people who need it most.
