Dino wants international support to hear Bolsonaro in the US – 02/28/2023 – Politics

The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino (PSB), said, this Tuesday (28), that Brazil may resort to some mechanism of international legal cooperation due to investigations that have the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL ) as a target, if the former representative does not return to Brazil.

The former president went to the United States in the last days of his term and has not yet returned. He ignored the democratic rite of symbolically transmitting power to his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

“There is an ongoing investigation and he is one of those formally investigated and, of course, he will have to be heard. If he does not appear in the coming months, the Federal Police will ask for measures. Ask who? Ask the Judiciary to trigger some international legal cooperation mechanism, which is a tendency that we are defending”, said the minister.

When questioned about a possible extradition request, the minister stated that it is not something that is on the agenda.

“It would be possible [a extradição], some measure of international legal cooperation would be possible, a letter rogatory, for example. the deadline [para que Bolsonaro retorne ao país] it is the period of common sense that we hope he has”, he said.

Bolsonaro is the target of different actions that call for his ineligibility for abuse of power in the elections; he is also in the crosshairs of investigations into the attacks on the headquarters of the three Powers on January 8, for having been his main supporter in several coup statements.

The former president, for example, is suspected of public incitement to the commission of a crime, after having posted a video on Facebook in January questioning the regularity of the elections. He deleted the contents shortly afterwards.

The ministers of the STF (Federal Supreme Court) determined the sending of at least ten requests for investigation against Bolsonaro to the first instance of the Judiciary, on the grounds of loss of special jurisdiction.

Most of these decisions were taken by Minister Cármen Lúcia.

The requests were submitted to the Supreme Court by parliamentarians such as Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) and Deputy Sâmia Bomfim (PSOL-SP) and by entities such as the Association of Judges for Democracy.

This Tuesday morning, President Lula called the former president a psychopath.

“Here, you are noticing that there are several things without glass [no Palácio do Planalto] even if it’s broken, because half a dozen barbarians, half a dozen vandals, half a dozen psychopaths, who knows guided by the biggest psychopath, thought that after losing the elections, they could occupy the palace and carry out a coup d’état,” declared Lula, in event.

Bolsonaro has also attacked President Lula during his stay in the US. The former president went so far as to claim that the new government “will not last long” and that there was injustice in the processes of the attacks in Brasilia on January 8.

“You can be sure, in a short time we will have news. By itself, if this government [Lula] continue in the line that it demonstrated in these first 30 days, it will not last long”, he said at the time.
