The Minister of Justice and Security, Flávio Dino, participated in a live this Monday morning (24) on the so-called “PL das Fake News”, or “PL da Censura”, alongside Rose Marie Santini, director of Netlab, a research laboratory dedicated to left-wing political activism that works with public resources within the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

The group of activists that integrates the laboratory is openly in favor of the bill supported by the federal government, which proposes to regulate social networks in order to accelerate and facilitate the removal of certain contents, and has already sent suggestions to be added to the proposal.

In May, during the government’s crusade for the approval of the bill in question, Dino cited fragile data produced by Netlab to justify the censorship of a Google demonstration on its website in which the company pointed out arguments contrary to the Fake News PL.

The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes – another strong defender of the regulation of social networks through the bill in question – also used data from activists to order the immediate removal of contents that were against the proposal. The director of Netlab, in defending the urgency of regulating social networks, stated that the 2018 presidential election, in which Jair Bolsonaro (PL) won, was marked by “disinformation campaigns”. She even went so far as to suggest a connection between such campaigns and the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco, which took place in the same year. For her, social networking platforms also played a “fundamental role” in the violent acts of January 8, in Brasília.

Orlando Silva and Flávio Dino kept the tune, suggesting that the regulation of social networks would curb crimes coming from the right. Similar to the director of Netlab, Lula’s minister tried to link the murder of Marielle Franco to the “spread of a culture of hate” through social networks.

“The internet is a fundamental space for society for good, but it is necessary to close the paths of evil so that other tragedies, such as the murder of Marielle and other hate events, do not occur in Brazil”, he said, when declaring that the regulation of social networks “is perhaps the greatest urgency of our time”.
