DF CPI will summon Elcio Franco after audio discussing coup

Elcio Franco, army reserve colonel and number 2 in the Ministry of Health under Bolsonaro, planned a coup d’état

Brasilia DF) – The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) of Anti-Democratic Acts, in progress in the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District (CLDF), wants to summon Colonel Elcio Franco after the release of audios with planning of a coup d’état. The summons request was made by the chairman of the commission, Chico Vigilante (PT), and will be placed as an extra agenda for the vote in the next session, Thursday (11), at the CLDF.

“The audios indicate his participation, even talking about the mobilization of troops of 1,500 Army men to help carry out a coup in Brazil. This is very serious,” said the district deputy. Elcio is a colonel in the Army reserve and former number 2 of the Ministry of Health in the management of Jair Bolsonaro.

The audios were released by CNN Brasil, exposing a dialogue in which he discusses a coup d’état to prevent Lula’s inauguration. According to the broadcaster, the recording is part of the investigation that served as the basis for the arrest, last week, of Army lieutenant colonel Mauro Cid, a former assistant to Bolsonaro in the Presidency.

For Chico Vigilante, this information adds to the testimonies already collected at the ongoing CPI in the DF, which raise suspicions about members of the Armed Forces. “They show the participation of elements of the Army within the plot of the coup”, he evaluated.

During the CPI, deponents accused the Army, mainly, of preventing actions in front of the Headquarters, where Bolsonarists were camped asking for a coup. Among these movements, would be the positioning of armored vehicles preventing the arrest of coup plotters and the expulsion of security forces from the DF who were trying to end the camp in the military area.

For Colonel Elcio Franco to be summoned, the summons request needs the approval of the members of the CPI, who have already approved, for example, the summoning of generals Augusto Heleno, Gonçalves Dias and Gustavo Henrique Dutra.
