Despite Zelensky’s invitation, Lula will not go to Kiev soon – 05/11/2023 – Panel

Despite the reiterated invitation by the president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, for president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to go to Kiev, Brazilian diplomats claim that the visit should not take place in the medium term.
According to these sources, the meeting between the Presidency’s special advisor for foreign policy, Celso Amorim, and the Ukrainian representative ends a first cycle of talks to position Brazil as a possible facilitator of dialogue between the country and Russia. Amorim met with Vladimir Putin in April.
At this moment, the international expectation is of an intensification of the conflict, with a Ukrainian counter-offensive. It would not be the best time to meet Lula.
Even so, the various actors on the international scene will continue to discuss solutions to the dispute so that, at the right time, they will be ready to act. The subject should dominate, for example, the conversations at the G7 meeting, which takes place on May 20 and 21 in Japan.
Even so, Brazilian diplomacy celebrated the signs given by Zelenski after the meeting with Amorim. He appointed Andrii Melnik, one of his vice-chancellors, to the embassy in Brazil.
The Ukrainian president once again expressed his desire to receive Lula in a post on a social network, shortly after his special advisor left. “We discussed the possibility of holding the Ukraine-Latin America Meeting. I look forward to continuing the dialogue with President Lula and welcoming him to Ukraine,” he wrote.
