Despite rapes and femicides, left-wing feminists support Hamas

Federal deputies Fernanda Melchionna, Talíria Petrone and Jandira Feghali are among some names on the left who defend women’s rights and the feminist agenda tooth and nail in the National Congress. But when taking a stand with the “Free Palestine” speech, the deputies forgot to mention the atrocities carried out by Hamas terrorists against women in the region. Positions like these treat the deaths, kidnappings and rapes of Israeli women as a “heroic struggle” by Hamas.

The terrorist group does not care about human rights or freedom, much less when related to women. According to the North American website Tablet, a survivor who was at a party that was targeted by Hamas said that women were “raped next to the bodies of their friends” and that they appeared to have been executed or taken hostage after the abuse. A video shows an Israeli woman with blood-stained pants, which would indicate rape, being transported in the trunk of a jeep by terrorists.

An Israeli NGO responsible for the profile on platform X (formerly Twitter), stated that Hamas has been kidnapping especially women, “confirming that terrorists are using rape as a weapon of war”.

Justifying the terrorist acts, deputy Fernanda Melchionna (PSOL-RS) published on her Instagram profile a note from the Socialist Left Movement which states that “the countless victims of this conflict are the result of Israeli violence and the occupation of Palestinian lands”. Furthermore, the text is full of expressions such as “Israeli settlers” and “traditional right with Jewish fundamentalist parties”.

Talíria Petrone (PSOL-RJ) reposted a post from the profile @subvertamos in the stories of her Instagram account. “We do not support US intervention proposals. Such attitudes only strengthen American imperialist interests”, says the page that presents itself as an ecosocialist political organization. Jandira Feghali (PcdoB-RJ) offered solidarity with the dead and injured in the war, but also stated that “Israel must comply with UN resolutions and get off Palestine”.

State deputy Luciana Genro (PSOL-RS) said it was not appropriate to compare “Palestinian resistance” to terrorism and that “it would be equivalent to treating the Jewish uprising against the Nazis in the same way”.

There are recurrent cases of rape and murder against women within Islamic culture. Extremist Islamic groups such as Hamas also do not support other agendas that are also dear to parliamentarians: there, women and children are treated as slaves and forced to marry, the penalty for homosexuals is death. Meanwhile, the deputies speak out against Israel, considering the country to be far-right.

Hamas attacks were supported by Iran

Among the support received, Hamas counted on a positive statement from Iran, even though the country denied having helped plan the surprise attack on Israel. A year ago, Iran was the scene of the death of a young Iranian woman after being arrested by the customs police for inappropriate use of the Islamic veil, the hijab.

In September, a report from the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights found that Iran has further restricted freedom of expression and women’s rights in the country.

The document cited a bill being processed in the Iranian parliament that proposes prison sentences for women and girls who violate the rules on wearing the veil, as well as bans on access to education and public health services, travel and confiscation of vehicles.
