Defender reports restriction of drugs to arrested scammers – 03/02/2023 – Panel

The DPU (Defensoria Pública da União) and the DPDF (Defensoria Pública do Distrito Federal) state that the coup demonstrators arrested after the acts of January 8 did not receive medication for continuous use, almost two months after the acts of vandalism.

In an inspection on Monday (27) at the DF Women’s Penitentiary, known as Colmeia, the defenders said they found that relatives deliver or send medicines to the prison, but that they do not reach the detainees.

The situation is contained in the 2nd Joint Human Rights Monitoring Report, which lists actions taken since January 8.

According to the institutions, complaints for lack of medication are constant at Colmeia and at CDP II (Provisional Detention Center II), located in the Papuda complex.

HIV positive people with diabetes, heart problems, hypertension, fibromyalgia, asthma and bronchitis were identified.

“It was verified that the greatest demand of the detainees referred to the health issue. There was great dissatisfaction, in addition to great irresignation on their part, claiming that: a) they do not receive medical attention in a timely manner; b) the unreasonable delay in obtaining and perception of medications; and c) that some, despite having chronic diseases that require the continuous use of certain drugs, had not yet received the medication”, describe the defenders after visiting Colmeia on February 15.

Last Monday (27), after confirming that the problem was still there, the defenders spoke with the penitentiary management, who clarified that there was only one head in the sector responsible for sorting the drugs in the entire penitentiary, which would explain the delay. .

During the inspections, the defenders even identified a young man with signs of intellectual disability, “considering his difficulty in communication, reasoning and understanding”.

At the moment, approximately 250 people who respond to criminal actions arising from anti-democratic acts in January are being assisted by the DPU. There are 11 defenders of the actions.

The steps, however, are not restricted to prisoners at the Army headquarters in Brasília and extend to the entire prison system. The document highlights that the problems found already existed, but were aggravated as a result of overcrowding.

“In the current state of affairs of prisons in the Federal District, overcrowding has problematic repercussions, generating, for example, an extra flow of work in prison routines, which puts pressure on the police contingent, subjecting them to exhausting journeys”, says the text.
