The Ministry of Sports modified the rules for nominating sporting events for Bolsa-Atleta by national administration and regulatory entities. The ordinance, published this Friday (19) in the Official Gazette of the Union, includes the Sudolympic Games among the nomination possibilities, complying with the recently created General Sports Law, 14,597 of 2023.
According to the general coordinator of the Bolsa-Atleta program, Fábio Gonçalves, the change should significantly increase the number of those covered by the benefit, as the athletes’ performance in the indicated events defines whether the scholarship will be granted or not.
The ordinance, which also determines the phases, processes and criteria for athletes to be included in the program, details the possibilities of participating events, making it possible to indicate among the international competitions one world, one Pan American and one South American, by modality, event , age subcategory (main, intermediate, beginner) and gender.
For national events it is possible to indicate professional competitions associated with the ranking; student events subdivided into three age groups; and also the base events.
In addition to the entry of specific events for the deaf population, the opening of the notice to indicate the Bolsa-Atleta Pódio modality, published in December 2023, already accepted registrations from deaf athletes, guides and assistants in Paralympic sport, as well as pregnant women and postpartum women.
Scholarship record
In Fábio Gonçalves’ assessment, all these changes should impact the number of scholarship holders in the next edition, with an increase of more than 1.5 thousand athletes. “In the 2023 edition, the program reached a record number of 8,292 registered athletes and 8,057 scholarship holders. The expectation is that, during this year, scholarships will reach 10 thousand athletes”.
These numbers account for the six types of existing benefits: Podium Athlete Grant, Olympic, International, National, Student and Base. The stage of indicating events precedes the registration period, which has different calendars, depending on the type of scholarship.
There is also a need for the National Sports Council to publish the stipulated criteria, each year, for granting the benefit to athletes who are not part of the Olympic, Paralympic and Deaflympic programs.
Program
Created in 2005, the program aims to enable high-performance scholarship holders to dedicate themselves, exclusively and peacefully, to training and local, South American, Pan-American, world, Olympic and Paralympic competitions. Monthly payments vary from R$370 (base) to R$15 thousand (podium).
The main category of the program covers high-performance athletes, who are positioned among the top 20 in the world ranking of the sport practiced or specific event, and who meet the criteria established by legislation.
At the last Olympic and Paralympic Games, held in Tokyo, Japan, in 2021, 80% of the members of the Olympic delegation and 95% of the Paralympic delegation were scholarship recipients from the federal program.
