The coordinator of the federal bench of Amapá in the National Congress, senator Davi Alcolumbre (AP), assured, this Thursday, 18th, that he will continue fighting, with all his strength and in all spheres, to have assured the right of the state start research on oil exploration. Today, there is the possibility of a new exploratory frontier for oil and gas in Brazil through the ultra-deep water region of the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, which extends from Amapá, passing through Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, to Rio Grande do Norte .
However, last Wednesday, the 17th, the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) denied a license for Petrobras to explore oil on the equatorial margin of Amapá. Petrobras was just waiting for this authorization to start test drilling about 540 kilometers off the coast of Amapá.
“Ibama’s decision to deny Petrobras a license to carry out exploratory oil research on the equatorial margin of Amapá is disrespectful to the people of Amapá. We will fight together, supported by technical, legal, reasonable and proportionate criteria, together with the federal government, federal and state benches, state government, entities and civil society to reverse this mistaken and unfair decision. Amapá will fight and we will not fight alone”, said the parliamentarian in an official note.
This week, the senator participated, in Brasília (DF), in a meeting with the Ministers of Mines and Energy and Regional Development, Alexandre Silveira and Waldez Góes, respectively, and Governor Clécio Luís, to discuss what he called an “important step for the socioeconomic development of the state, especially with regard to possible oil exploration in the region”.
“As a senator of the Republic, we will continue to act firmly, with all spheres of central power, to make it possible for us to know our riches, to be able to exploit, within all the best international standards, from an environmental point of view, these riches and give for the people of Amapa, for Amapá and for Brazil, the condition of developing such a rich region, which is the Amazon region”, stressed Alcolumbre.
The Brazilian Equatorial Margin is considered promising due to its geological similarity with the sedimentary basins of the Guianas and Suriname, where other companies have announced recent important discoveries of oil and gas, and the reserves in Guiana are already in commercial production. According to Alcolumbre, this is an “unprecedented and extraordinary” perspective for the state to use its natural wealth to grow and, above all, help the population, which still faces high levels of poverty.
