The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohamed bin Salman, announced this Monday (23) that his country will host an eSports World Cup next year.
“The eSports World Cup is a natural step on Saudi Arabia’s path to becoming the world center for video games and eSports,” the crown prince said in a statement.
Known for being a passionate player, especially Call of Duty, the prince hopes that an event of this type will serve to boost the sector and create 39,000 jobs by 2030.
Saudi Arabia has invested massively in the video games sector since Mohamed bin Salman, 38, was named crown prince in 2017.
Last year, he announced an investment of 38 billion dollars (R$140 billion) in the Savvy Games group, owned by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund.
Saudi authorities want to transform the country into a “paradise for game developers” who can create new products to “promote Saudi and Arab culture.”
The first edition of the World Cup is expected to take place next year and will replace the Gamers8 festival, an eight-week eSports tournament that distributed US$45 million in prizes this year.
The eSports World Cup “will be accompanied by a set of diverse activities and events that will attract visitors and tourists to the city, making it a gaming capital”, highlighted the prince in his statement.
“The tournament will include the world’s most popular games, across all genres, and will offer the biggest prize pool in the history of eSports,” the statement said, without specifying the name of the games.
