Critical Opposition “Road Voting” of Tax Reform

The Novo bench and other opposition parties tried at all costs to postpone the vote on the second round of tax reform in the Chamber of Deputies, this Friday (15). The final text was approved with a score of 365 to 118. The in-person/virtual session lasted for more than 10 hours.

Despite defending the need for tax reform, the leader of Novo in the Chamber, deputy Adriana Ventura (Novo-SP), criticized the way the vote was conducted, without adequate time to evaluate the text that was agreed between the leaders and the rapporteur of the proposal, Aguinaldo Ribeiro (PP-PB). “I regret this wasted vote. We cannot vote on something that we cannot quantify or have clarity, and according to the Senate’s text, there is clearly an increase in tax rates”, she lamented.

In the session, deputy Bia Kicis (PL-DF) criticized the current government that only thinks about revenue, instead of saving. “The Bolsonaro government delivered a surplus of 50 billion reais, and we already have a deficit of 200 billion reais in this government. And then we only talk about spending, spending and spending, collecting, collecting and collecting. Until when? For How long do you think the Brazilian people will endure this bloodletting? That is not possible”, he pointed out.

For deputy José Medeiros (PL-MT), the approved reform “cannot work”. “What is being born is a platypus. Something wrong is not right. We are under the aegis of a government that has a personality focused on spending, as much as it is not lying, it is spending”, claimed the parliamentarian.

Marcel van Hattem (Novo-RS) also regretted the approval of a reform that only benefits the PT government. “I’m sad that an issue as important as tax reform ends up worsening, in many ways, our current system and giving the PT and Lula more money from Brazilians’ pockets to stay in power, spend and waste, whether with Lula and Janja’s trips, or with the amendments used here as a bargaining chip with many Parliamentarians who, unfortunately, have no conviction, but only a price”, he said.
