Greatest scorer at the Olympic Games, one of the biggest references in Brazilian women’s football and outside the World Cup. This is Cristiane’s situation. At the age of 38, the Santos striker is out of a World Cup for the first time since 2003. In an interview for the program Conversation with Bialfrom TV Globo, the player said she doesn’t understand why she was left out of Pia Sundhage’s list.
“I didn’t have any internal friction with the CBF or any director whatsoever. And with Pia, I honestly don’t know. I swear I would like to know the reason”, said the Santos striker.
Cristiane has not been called by Pia since the beginning of 2021. Despite good seasons defending Santos, the striker was left out of the Tokyo Olympics and saw the Brazilian team eliminated on penalties by Canada in the quarterfinals. For a long time it was speculated that the absence of the attacker would have some relation with a friction with the CBF and this was denied by the athlete.
“Look, I remember that the last time I beat the CBF was after the Olympic Games (in 2016), in which I even left the national team at the time and addressed an open letter to the president (Marco Polo Del Nero, at the time), precisely because we had no improvements within the national team.
At the time of the announcement of the 26 players, Pia Sundhage was asked about the reason for Cristiane’s absence from the Women’s World Cup and preferred not to comment too much about it. “I think that, to show respect to the 26 players that we are taking, I want to talk about these players. They are the main ones in the World Cup”, said the coach.
