Creator of Banda B, Carneiro Neto recalls table with Petraglia

The end of Banda B’s daily sports coverage on the airwaves represents the end of a beautiful story of prestige, success and huge audience.

“The story of Rádio Banda B is obviously a success. And I was really the one who created it”, says Carneiro. “And this was the story that unfortunately now we have the news that it will stop broadcasting football matches on the radio, keeping it only on the internet”, he continues.

Banda B was born on the AM airwaves as an arm of CBN Curitiba, in 1997, the result of a small table between Carneiro Neto and Mario Celso Petragliathen director of CBN in the capital of Paraná.

“We had closed a contract with the Inepar group, through the company’s partner, Mario Celso Petraglia, who also accumulated the functions of president of Athletico and directed Radio CBN, from Curitiba”, explains Carneiro.

“And then we made a great team, it was a success”, he reinforces, recalling the team of narrators that still had big names, like Edgard Felipe and Marcelo Ortiz. The latter, by the way, is still on Band B.

In addition to the FM 90.1 prefix, CBN also had AM 550, in the so-called moderate amplitude. With the profusion of Athletico, Coritiba and Paraná games at that time, the CBN team began to make separate transmissions, also taking advantage of the AM airwaves.

“And then one day I proposed to Petraglia that we, instead of keeping the programming coupled, create a new radio station on AM, with new programming, and that it would join CBN only in football broadcasts”, he continues.

“He thought it was a good idea and we launched it. And I then suggested the name Band B”, recalls Carneiro.

In 1999, Banda B ended up being sold to the broadcaster and state deputy, Luiz Carlos Martins. The name, already popularized, was kept.

“And then Banda B gained great prestige, an audience and its own sports team. I even participated in it later, in 2000 and 2001, covering Athletico’s Brazilian title, acting alongside Barcímio Sicupira as a commentator”, completes Carneiro.

Journalist Greysson Assunção worked for a decade at Banda B and regrets the end of daily sports programs and days.

“It started in September 1997 and the beginning of the radio was CBN. Petraglia had two dials, on FM and AM, and the people who played football thought of playing a game on each. So the name Banda B was created by Carneiro Neto “, he explains.

The company will continue with football coverage in digital format, on YouTube, in addition to daily bulletins on radio programming and the internet news portal.

“It is terrible and very sad. For the medium of radio, for communication in general. It is the most traditional radio station in Curitiba, when it comes to football. It’s less of a work camp and practically decrees the end of football on AM radio”, he continues.

Veteran journalist and former commentator of Banda B, Irapitan Costa says that, for more than two decades, Banda B was a reference in information, credibility and daily coverage of clubs in Curitiba.

“It has always been a reference in sports radio, occupying the space that formerly belonged to Rádio Clube, and other traditional radio stations that have also gone”, says Costa. “The economic issue weighed heavily on this decision, but it is a gap that remains, because it was the only survivor in terms of AM”, he reinforces.

“There is a tremendous void, which unfortunately today is moving towards the internet, but we cannot forget the slightly older public who do not have this habit”, adds the journalist.
