CPI of coup acts summons Bolsonaro allies and spares Lula’s former ministers

The CPI that investigates the acts of January 8 will hear Mauro Cid and Anderson Torres, allies of Bolsonaro, but decided not to call former ministers of Lula

Brasilia DF) – The Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) into the coup acts of January 8 approved, this Tuesday (13), the summoning of Mauro Cid, former assistant to Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Public Security of the DF. The collegiate, however, decided to spare Gonçalves Dias, former minister of the Institutional Security Office of the Presidency of the Republic (GSI), and Ricardo Cappelli, executive secretary of the GSI.

Those summoned are obliged to go to the collegiate to provide information. Respondents, however, have the right to refuse participation. There is still no date set for the hearings with Cid and Torres.

Other names linked to former President Jair Bolsonaro were also approved by the collegiate. These are the cases of Braga Netto, former Minister of Defense and former candidate for vice president, and Augusto Heleno, former chief minister of the GSI. The former President of the Republic is also the target of a summons request, but, by agreement, he was spared this first meeting of the group.

The only name linked to the current government who was invited to speak at the CPI is Minister Flávio Dino, of Justice and Public Security.

The requests approved this Tuesday request that the reports forwarded by the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) to the federal government bodies on the risks of the demonstration on January 8 be sent to the CPI. The collegiate also requests the sending of files and images, internal and external, from the National Congress, Superior Federal Court, Palácio do Planalto, Itamaraty and Ministry of Justice; Institutional Security Office (GSI) defense information during attacks; non-classified evidence produced in the STF under Inquiry No. 4,879, which investigates the attacks; among others.

• Anderson Torres, former Secretary of Public Security for the Federal District and former Minister of Justice;
• Mauro Cid, former assistant to Jair Bolsonaro;
• Braga Netto, former Minister of Defense and former vice-presidential candidate;
• Augusto Heleno, former Chief Minister of the GSI;
• Elcio Franco, former executive secretary of the Ministry of Health;
• Fábio Augusto Vieira, former commander of the Federal District Military Police;
• Jorge Naime, former commander of Military Police Operations in the Federal District;
• Silvinei Vasques, former general director of the Federal Highway Police (PRF):
• Robson Cândido, General Delegate of the Civil Police of the Federal District.

Parliamentarians also requested information from various public bodies. Among the requests, there are videos recording acts of vandalism in the buildings of Congress, STF and Palácio do Planalto on January 8.
