Covid: Students want Janaina to prove that she took a vaccine – 02/17/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

São Paulo state deputy Janaina Paschoal (PRTB) became the target of a representation sent by students of the USP Faculty of Law to the institution’s board. The document asks that the parliamentarian be obliged to present her vaccination card against Covid-19 before returning to the classrooms.

The initiative is from the Academic Center XI de Agosto, which has been staunchly opposed to Janaina’s return to Largo de São Francisco, in the capital of São Paulo. In a manifestation published at the beginning of this month, the entity stated that the teacher was no longer welcome and that her return would cause “disturbing”. The statement divided students.

Janaina, who was not elected to the Senate in 2022 and will end her term in the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo on March 15, is one of the authors of the law that prohibits the requirement to present proof of vaccination against Covid-19 for access to public or private places.

The proposal was sanctioned by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) last Wednesday (15). One day after the publication of the norm in the Official Gazette, USP and Unicamp announced that they will abandon the requirement for proof of vaccination between students and employees.

São Paulo state universities were the institutions with the strictest protocols and rules to protect their academic communities from Covid until then.

For members of the Academic Center XI de Agosto, however, the university’s retreat does not invalidate the demand for Janaina Paschoal’s vaccination certificate. “We are going to amend the initial request so that, at the Faculty of Law, the need for presentation continues to be valid for the entire community”, says student and member of the entity Erick Araujo.

The representation against the parliamentarian was addressed to the Congregation of the Faculty of Law, the highest body for deliberating the institution’s affairs. In addition to proof of immunization, students request that Janaina Paschoal be declared “persona non grata” for “spreading false news and fighting the policy of confronting the coronavirus”.

In the document sent to the board, students claim that Janaina colluded with speeches by former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) during the pandemic and shared false information about the immunizer, such as when she suggested that it could cause a heart attack and stroke (stroke).

“The role that associate professor Janaina occupied in the denialist wave brought by Bolsonarism was not that of a fierce and unreasonable endorsement of theses that were outrageous to democratic values, but that of an ‘enlightened’ representative, who in her arguments defended the same absurdities, only under the molds of an intellectualized speech and the clothes of protection of freedom”, affirms the academic center in the representation.

Contacted by the column to comment on the criticism of her return to the USP Faculty of Law, Janaina Paschoal said that she will fulfill her duty by returning to the institution, since her license will come to an end, and that protests are part of democracy, but should not exceed “the limits of the manifestation of thought”.

“When no one spoke of quotas, I defended them. While many colleagues are the children and grandchildren of diplomats and judges, I am the granddaughter of migrants from the Northeast and come from the outskirts of São Paulo. , and I will return”, said the deputy.

“As for the protests, they belong to democracy, as long as they do not go beyond the limits of expression of thought”, he added.
