Councilor Eúde Duarte Lucas (PDT) made a statement in the Chamber of Jucás, a municipality in Ceará, saying that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be cured “in the peia” It is “in the whip”while mocking the messages of support sent to actress Letícia Sabatella, who discovered the disorder as an adult this Tuesday (19).

In his speech, the parliamentarian said: “I was playing here with my colleagues, I watched Fantástico on Sunday, and I went to sleep thinking: ‘boy, I think I’m autistic too!’. Based on the statement the artists made… I think I was autistic, but my father took autistic people to task, in my time he used to take autistic people to task. I was a bit of a mischievous boy.”

With the negative repercussion of the phrase, Eúde Duarte Lucas made a note of clarification posted on the city council’s social media, saying that he mentioned his own case and how it was treated in the past, due to the lack of diagnosis.

“I was the councilor who presented the most bills in favor of Autism in the municipality, precisely because I understood and embraced this cause.”

The parliamentarian also clarified that he never intended to offend people and asked for forgiveness for expressing himself in the wrong way. “I deeply regret that it was misinterpreted.” and reiterated that he is still committed to continuing to present projects and fight for TEA.

Autism Spectrum Disorder affects two million Brazilians and is usually identified during childhood. The diagnosis of this condition is made based on the child’s behavior and interviews with parents or guardians. There is no cure for ASD, but there are a series of treatments that can improve the quality of life of these people, according to each level of the spectrum.
