The 2024 Copa América will be played in the United States and will feature the ten South American teams from CONMEBOL and six guests from CONCACAF (North America and Central America), the two confederations announced this Friday (27).

The next edition of the tournament will thus serve as preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will organize jointly with its neighbors Mexico and Canada.

According to the joint statement, the six countries invited by Concacaf will qualify for the competition through the 2023/24 Concacaf League of Nations.

The entities also agreed on other initiatives in club football and women’s football.

The United States has already organized the special edition of the 2016 Copa América Centenario, in which other Concacaf teams also participated. Chile won the tournament.

The 2024 Copa America was scheduled for Ecuador, but the country withdrew from hosting the tournament last year.

“Conmebol and Concacaf are united by historic and emotional ties. But, above all, we are united by the passion, characteristic of all America, for football and sport. We are determined to renew and expand our joint initiatives and projects”, said CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez.

“We want this passion to translate into more and better competitions and for football and its values ​​to grow and strengthen throughout the hemisphere. Without a doubt, both confederations think big and we are going to work with that orientation”, he stated.

Under the agreement between the two confederations, a club competition in the “final four” format will also be organized, in which the best teams on the continent will participate.

The four participating teams (two from each confederation) will qualify through existing club competitions, and the first edition of this tournament could be held in 2024.

There will also be a collaboration in women’s football, as Concacaf will invite the four best teams in South America to compete in the new Women’s Gold Cup in 2024.

This tournament will be held in the United States and will count on the participation of Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and Paraguay.

“This partnership is to support the continued growth of men’s and women’s football in Concacaf and Conmebol, and will be really beneficial for both confederations,” said Concacaf President Victor Montagliani.
