COP30 headquarters, Belém will have nowhere to dispose of garbage – 05/29/2023 – Panel

Chosen by the UN (United Nations) as the venue for COP30, the climate change conference that negotiates the implementation of the Paris Agreement, Belém will have nowhere to dispose of its residents’ garbage from August onwards.
The Marituba landfill, which serves, in addition to Belém, the municipalities of Ananindeua and Marituba, has reached its maximum capacity and there is a risk of contamination by leachate.
An agreement signed at the TJ-PA (Pará Court of Justice) extended the deadline for the end of the structure’s activities to August 31 of this year. The limit initially was May 31, 2021, but at the time, an alternative was not found in time.
So far, however, the municipalities and the state of Pará still haven’t found a solution to the problem. On Friday (26), a public hearing in Alepa (Legislative Assembly of the State of Pará) ended without indicating what could be the new destination for solid waste in the metropolitan region of the capital.
When contacted, the City Hall of Belém stated that it opened a public consultation for the notice that will choose a new concessionaire for the treatment of solid waste. The deadline for companies to demonstrate ended on the 5th. He also highlighted that the city should receive investments to host the COP30, and one of the legacies should be efficient garbage collection.
The advisory of the state of Pará did not respond until the publication of this note.
