Congress meets this week with the expectation of installing the CPMI of 8/1

Federal deputies and senators meet on Wednesday (26) for the first joint meeting of Congress with the expectation of installing the CPMI that investigates the acts of January 8, in Brasília. The meeting, which would have taken place last week, was suspended by order of the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), who frustrated the first attempt to read the commission’s request.

The reading of the CPMI request was scheduled for last Tuesday (18), but the session of Congress ended up being postponed, which led to protests from opposition members and even an attempt to obstruct the polls.

However, after the release of images showing the invasion of the Planalto Palace on January 8, with the participation of civil and military agents from the Institutional Security Office (GSI) among the demonstrators, Pacheco’s attitude changed so much as well as the government – ​​which was trying to demobilize adherence to the application.

“On the 26th, what should have happened on the 18th will happen, which is the reading of the CPMI. I never shied away from it under any circumstances, that would be the same forwarding, reading the CPMI, considering that it meets the requirements”, said the President of the Senate, last Thursday (20).

The CPMI referral started to be supported by the government in an attempt to contrast the assertions made by the opposition that it had some involvement in the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers. The resignation of the then GSI minister, Marco Edson Gonçalves Dias, who was a trusted man of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), justified the questions raised by the parliamentarians about the performance in the case.

In addition to reading the CPMI request, the joint session of Congress will also analyze 25 presidential vetoes stopped since 2021.
