The Urban Development Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved Bill 258/21, which determines the installation of safety and accessibility items on stairs, escalators, treadmills and ramps in residential and commercial buildings.
Presented by the licensed deputy Roberto de Lucena (SP), the proposal requires, for example, that mechanisms prevent the inappropriate movement of baby strollers or shopping carts. Handrails will be mandatory, as will warning signs about precautions to avoid accidents.
The approved opinion, presented by the deputy Josenildo Abrantes (PDT-AP), was in favor of the project and the amendment adopted by the Commission for the Defense of the Rights of People with Disabilities. The amendment established a period of 180 days, after the sanction of the future law, for the measures to come into force.
“The implementation of safety devices plays a crucial role in mitigating accidents, particularly protecting vulnerable users, including the elderly, people with disabilities and children”assessed the rapporteur.
