The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) announced the list of candidates for the 2023 Best Athlete of the Year award at the Brazil Olímpico Awards. In the female category, Ana Patrícia and Duda (beach volleyball), Bia Haddad (tennis) and Rebeca Andrade (artistic gymnastics) are the competitors. In the men’s category, the dispute will be between Filipe Toledo (surfing), Hugo Calderano (table tennis) and Marcus D´Almeida (archery).
“All competitors for the Best Athlete of the Year trophy at the 2023 Brazil Olympic Awards are high-level representatives of Brazilian sport. It is important to highlight the quality of these athletes and the promising future for our sport in different modalities. The year 2023 was one of great results for our country and the COB is extremely proud to celebrate these achievements and pay homage to the big stars of the show, the athletes. It was a year of many successes, especially in the Pan American Games and in several world championships. The shortest Olympic cycle in history is coming to an end and Brazil remains firmly on its way to Paris 2024”stated the president of COB, Paulo Wanderley.
The 24th edition of the Brazil Olímpico Award will have a new format without leaving aside the already renowned honors of the gala night of national Olympic sport. In addition to the traditional awards for the best athletes in each sport, this edition has new categories: Comeback of the Year, Teams of the Year (male and female) and New Athlete. Added to these are the traditional Athlete of the Year (male and female), Best of Sports, Olympic Spirit Award, Best Individual Coach, Best Collective Coach and Adhemar Ferreira da Silva Trophy.
The winners of the main categories were chosen by an electoral panel of experts in Olympic sport in a vote held until November 29th. The public will be responsible for defining which athletes will take home the Fan Athlete and Inspire Awards and the new Revelation and Comeback Athlete of the Year awards.
The COB also announced the names of the best athletes in each of the Olympic and Pan-American disciplines (see below).
