One of the two biggest clubs in Ukraine, Shakhtar Donetsk will transfer a third of the value of the sale to Chelsea of ​​striker Mykhailo Mudryk for use in the Ukrainian War, which involves Russia and separatist issues.

The negotiation of the 22-year-old athlete with the English team is the largest in history involving an Eastern European team, US$ 76 million (R$ 389 million), and is among the 40 most expensive in football.

Of this amount, Shakhtar decided to donate US$ 25 million for Ukraine to use in the war against Russia, which is close to completing 11 months – the Russians invaded the neighboring country on February 24, 2022.

The money will go towards the Heart of Azovstal project, aimed at helping families of Ukrainian soldiers killed or disabled on the battlefield.

“The money will be used to cover different needs: medical and prosthetic treatment, psychological support, specific requests,” Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov said in a statement.

“To ensure transparency, the project will have an independent professional team that will be in contact with Azovstal defenders, their families and volunteers”, concluded the text.

Azovstal, one of the largest industrial complexes in Europe and located in eastern Ukraine, has become a place of refuge and defense against Russian army bombing.

Akhmetov said he intended for Shakhtar to play, as soon as possible, a friendly against Chelsea, which from 2003 to 2022 was owned by a Russian, billionaire Roman Abramovich.

“Unfortunately it is impossible now as Ukraine is fighting a horrendous and unfair war waged against us by the Russian Federation,” said the club’s president.

“But I’m confident we’re going to win [a guerra]. And we are going to play a friendly against Chelsea at the Donbass Arena in a Ukrainian Donetsk.”

Since mid-2014, Shakhtar has not played at this stadium for security reasons, as the city has been a conflict zone – it was annexed by the Putin government in September last year.

The club, 13 times national champion (behind only Dynamo Kiev, 16 times), started to play its games in Lviv, then Kharkiv, then Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. In the European Champions League, he played in Poland.
