Clécio Luís sanctions law prohibiting religious intolerance in Amapá – News of Brazil

Amapá is a state rich in cultural, ethnic and religious diversity. In respect of this multiplicity, the governor, Clecio Luis, sanctioned Law 2,863 that prohibits religious intolerance in the state and provides for the prohibition of public resources to support events that encourage the practice.
In its sole paragraph, the legislation defines religious intolerance as “all forms of discrimination based on religion, beliefs or convictions and the purpose or effect of which is the exclusion or impediment of the exercise of human rights and fundamental freedoms under equal conditions”.
Article 3 of the law also determines that, in case of non-compliance with this Law, the offender will be subject to a fine and the impossibility of holding public events that depend on authorization from state bodies, for a period of two years.
“We live in a moment where it is no longer possible to tolerate any discriminatory practices. In Amapá, we have an intense manifestation of African-based religions, which are the most frequent victims. This law comes as a concrete gesture to guarantee religious freedom, in the fullness of civil freedom, as a fundamental human right.”said the governor, Clécio Luís.
For the director-president of the State Foundation for Policies for the Promotion of Racial Equality (Marabaixo Foundation), Josilana Santos, Law 2,863 is a great tool to combat cases of religious intolerance in Amapá.
“It is a much more serious and common problem than one imagines, unfortunately. We even have records of invasions of religious temples. The State has the mission of combating such practices and guaranteeing respect for all religious manifestations.”highlighted Josilana.
The member of an African religion and member of the Afro-Amerindian Forum of Amapá (Frafamap), Graziela Martins, celebrates the sanction of the new law.
“People of African origin have already suffered a lot from prejudice and religious intolerance. A more radical tool to combat this practice was needed. There are members of our religion who have already had to move house, their temples stoned or forced to stop their practices due to actions of religious intolerance by neighbors. This law comes as a fundamental support against this reality “highlighted Graziela.
The legislation is already in force and was published in the Official State Gazette nº 7944.
