Cléber Machado, 60, had a plan. The narrator wanted to retire from TV Globo, but not before narrating the 2026 World Cup. It would be the tenth of his career. But, a few days ago, he was surprised by the news that he would be dismissed from the company he had been with for 35 years.

“A month ago, 15, 20 days ago, I didn’t imagine that,” he told Sheet the professional, who received the announcement about his departure last Wednesday (22).

Cléber sought out the station’s executives to understand the reasons. In the conversation, it became clear to him that the reason was financial, “by the criterion that was adopted”.

“I asked: ‘You don’t want me anymore or is it money?’ They answered option B”, said the narrator.

Asked if his salary had become too high for the current standard established by Globo, he just said: “It’s possible”.

The paulista was one of the professionals who had been in the sport for the longest time on the broadcaster. There was an expectation that he would be the natural substitute for Galvão Bueno, 72, as the main narrator of the Rio channel — although he denies this perspective, because “a succession for Galvão was never discussed”.

Signs that his prestige was no longer the same began to emerge last year, when the narrator was passed over in choosing the team taken by Globo to cover the World Cup in Qatar. He was part of the team that stayed in Brazil to work remotely.

Cléber denies being hurt, although he notes: “Who doesn’t want to cover a World Cup?”

The professional assured, however, that his comment live, during the World Cup, about a video that showed tribute from Fifa (International Football Federation) to Galvão for having worked in 12 finals was in jest.

“I also want to congratulate myself. They could send me something like that, it’s the ninth World Cup. Here is the ninth World Cup. I don’t know if it’s worth the distance, but…”, he said, at the time. .

Cléber stated that the executives were “very kind” to him when they warned him in advance about the team scheduled to travel to Qatar.

“They spoke to me before [divulgar] the list [à imprensa]”, he says. “When June, July arrived, they told me that I wasn’t going to the World Cup.”

Only Galvão Bueno, who ceased to be a narrator on the Rio station, and Luís Roberto, who remain on the channel, narrated the tournament in loco on open TV.

“Luís Roberto has grown up for some time now, I don’t think I’ve slowed down”, said Cléber.

The narrator said that he had already planned a vacation for May before knowing that he would leave Globo and intends to comply with the rest period in the same way, but he did not rule out work before that, without revealing whether this concerns a traditional TV channel or some other streaming platform.
