Cláudio Castro says it would be ‘natural’ to run for the Senate – 04/20/2023 – Panel

The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro (PL), says that he will only define his future in politics when he gets closer to the end of his term, in 2026, and that seeking the Senate is an alternative. He cannot, by law, run for re-election.
“It is natural that the Senate is a path for a governor at the end of his second term. We had several examples in the last election, from Flávio Dino (PSB-MA), Wellington Dias (PT-PI) and Camilo Santana (PT-CE) ,” he told the Panel.
The problem for this alternative to materialize is the congestion of PL candidates for the Senate in the next election. In 2026, the mandates of current senators Carlos Portinho and Flávio Bolsonaro expire, who may want to be re-elected.
Therefore, Castro says he could evaluate alternatives. “I would have no problem running for office as a federal deputy, or even not running as a candidate, taking a sabbatical and then trying for Rio City Hall [em 2028]”, he declared, who is a lawyer and could spend some time practicing the profession. “The problem is not to apply, it is to win”, he added.
He reaffirmed that he hopes that Flávio Bolsonaro will be a candidate for mayor of Rio in 2024.
