civil society takes to the streets against Dallagnol’s impeachment

Organized civil society movements promise to take to the streets this Sunday (4), in several Brazilian cities, in protest against the impeachment of federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR). According to the coordinator of the Olho no Congresso Brasil movement, Cristina Leal, the main objective of the demonstrations is to make the people return to the streets to express their indignation against the “arbitrariness” of the courts and issues that are being disrespected in Brazil.

The strong point of the protests will be at Boca Maldita, a traditional spot in the center of Curitiba, capital of Paraná, the state for which Dallagnol was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, with approximately 345,000 votes (344,917). The act will take place on Sunday afternoon, at 3 pm, and will be attended by the parliamentarian and former coordinator of the Lava Jato task force in Curitiba, the president of Podemos, Renata Abreu (SP), federal and state deputies from various parties and representatives of civil society movements.

The decision to call the demonstrations came after the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) annulled the mandate of federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol, on the grounds of non-compliance with the Clean Record Law. On May 17, by 7 votes to 0, the ministers of the TSE considered that the parliamentarian would have violated this law by having asked for dismissal from the position of attorney to avoid a possible administrative disciplinary process. In Cristina Leal’s assessment, this is yet another of the arbitrariness committed lately by the country’s courts.

The protests are being convened through social networks with the motto “Democracy, Freedom and Justice”, and bring together movements such as Vem pra Rua, Fiscaliza Brasil, Mulheres com Moro, Lavajatista Resistance, Fora Corruptos, Popular Movement for Political Inspection, among others. others.

According to the coordinator of the Olho no Congresso Brasil movement, Cristina Leal, the idea is that the large demonstration will take place in Curitiba, and that protests will be held in other capitals and municipalities in the interior of Brazil on a smaller scale, but with the same importance.

Acts for Brazil

Demonstrations are scheduled in at least 12 Brazilian states this Sunday, June 4th.

In São Paulo, the act will be on Avenida Paulista, in the heart of the capital, with a walk. Participants will take 350 black balloons representing the “silenced” votes of Dallagnol, the most voted federal deputy in Paraná in 2022, with almost 345 thousand votes.

Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Belo Horizonte, Vitória, Manaus, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Salvador, Goiânia and Belém are also among the capitals that will hold events this Sunday. Check below the schedule of demonstrations in Brazil, with time and place of each act.

Cristina Leal, from the Olho no Congresso Brasil movement, says that these acts will be a kind of “warm-up”, to make people feel safe, free, on the streets. “After January 8th and with all the arbitrariness of the STF and Alexandre de Moraes, people are afraid. Even because January 8 was a very shocking thing for everyone”.

Indignation

This Sunday’s acts also intend to demonstrate discontent and indignation with the visit of Nicolas Maduro to Brazil, last week, when the Venezuelan dictator was received with honors as head of state by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT); the nomination of Cristiano Zanin, Lula’s defense attorney in Lava Jato, to the Federal Supreme Court (STF); the sanitation decree of the PT government, and even the considerations about changes in Eletrobras.

Deputy Adriana Ventura (Novo-SP) is one of the most active parliamentarians in calling for the June 4 acts. She recorded videos calling the population to take to the streets. “The unfair and unreasonable impeachment of Deputy Deltan Dallagnol shows that we cannot remain silent in the face of this disharmony between the powers. There is no justice when one power interferes with another, there is no democracy when there is judicial activism, there is no freedom when one power is on its knees for the other”, guarantees the parliamentarian in videos that are circulating on the networks.

In an interview with a podcast, Dallagnol pointed out that there are other cases, besides his, “every two weeks you had Deltan, you had Crivella now, you have Rogério Marinho, you have the entire PL ticket in Ceará; and every two weeks a right-wing parliamentarian is being impeached since the beginning of the year. I have a great concern with this reading that the system has two weights and two measures, ”he said.

“It’s for democracy, freedom and justice. If it weren’t for society in the streets, Lava Jato would have died in 2015. The demonstrations are again very important”, stressed the parliamentarian.

Brasilia will not have demonstrations

Matter of People’s Gazette showed that the movements decided not to hold an event in Brasília, not only because of the trauma of January 8, but also because the logistics and organization for events at the Esplanada dos Ministérios became more difficult with the Security Secretariat.

“It had to have at least 5,000 people and because it was at the last minute, and without the guarantee of the Secretariat of Public Security, we decided not to do it”, says Lucas Tomas, from the União, Juventude e Liberdade group.

Although an act with people is not foreseen, the organizers are evaluating whether it will be possible to at least hang a banner against the impeachment of Dallagnol on an overpass in Brasília.
