City Hall releases bivalent booster for people aged 60 or over and immunosuppressed

Manaus (AM) – People aged 60 or over and immunocompromised users over the age of 12 can take a booster shot of the bivalent vaccine against Covid-19 from this Monday (18). Manaus City Hall reported that the vaccine will be released to anyone who received the first dose more than six months ago.

The head of the Municipal Health Department (Semsa), Shádia Fraxe, reiterates that the offer of bivalent, an immunobiological that strengthens the body’s defenses against the original strain of Covid, the omicron variant and its subvariants, follows the recommendation of the Ministry of Health, formalized by through technical note nº 83/2003.

The secretary explains that the measure was motivated by the detection of subvariants of Sars-Cov-2 and new sublineages in Brazil. Another factor was the change in the epidemiological scenario in Ceará, which presented an outbreak of Covid-19 (localized increase in the number of cases), due to the JN.1 strain.

“People aged 60 or over and those who are immunosuppressed are more susceptible to severe forms of Covid-19, which, although it presents a calm scenario in Manaus, remains a concern. Reinforcement with bivalent is an important step to control and reduce the circulation of viruses, especially during the rainy season. Our request now is for these groups to get vaccinated,”

People with severe primary immunodeficiency are part of the immunosuppressed group; chemotherapy for cancer; solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT); use of immunosuppressive drugs; people living with HIV/AIDS; use of corticosteroids in doses ≥ 20 mg/day of prednisone, or equivalent, for ≥ 14 days; use of immune response-modifying drugs; auto-inflammatory, inflammatory bowel diseases; hemodialysis patients; patients with chronic inflammatory immune-mediated diseases.

The bivalent vaccine began to be offered by Semsa in February this year, initially covering seven priority groups, including the elderly, pregnant and postpartum women, immunosuppressed people, people living in long-term institutions and their workers, indigenous villagers, riverside dwellers and quilombolas.

From March onwards, the booster dose was released to users with comorbidities in the age group from 12 to 59 years old and, in April, users aged 18 and over could already strengthen their vaccination protection with the bivalent.

To receive the vaccine, users must present an official document with photo, SUS National Card and vaccination card.
