The City Hall of São Caetano do Sul, in Greater São Paulo, started distributing last Monday (5) in municipal schools a booklet with racist expressions that should be avoided by teachers and students.
The booklet “Racist Phrases: Why Not to Use It” has 36 examples of words or phrases considered inappropriate. Among them are “the thing is black”, “bad hair”, “creole”, “macumbeiro”, “born with one foot in the kitchen”, “black with a white soul” and “black service”.
“These words designated descendants of enslaved people, that is, those who were not born free; therefore, they are impregnated with prejudice and must be abandoned”, says the entry on “creole” and “creole”.
But there are also some terms whose discriminatory connotation is not consensual among academics. An example is the verb “to clarify”.
“At first sight, there is nothing wrong with the word and its use, however racism is embedded in it from the moment it conveys the idea that the understanding of something can only occur under the blessings of clarity, whiteness, keeping black things in the field of doubt and ignorance”, says the booklet.
The same occurs with “nightstand” and “on the thighs”, mentioned in the booklet as inappropriate, but which are the object of division among scholars.
The booklet was produced by Cecape (Training Center for Education Professionals), linked to the City Hall, administered by José Auricchio Jr. (PSDB).
