City Hall and the Union of Bus Workers reach an agreement and avoid a strike in public transport

Manaus (AM) – The City of Manaus prevented the strike in the public transport system scheduled for this Wednesday (17). The decision to suspend the stoppage took place after a conversation between the mayor of Manaus, David Almeida, and the president of the Union of Workers in Road Transport of Manaus (STTRM), Givanci Oliveira, who decided that the system will work normally this Wednesday.

Workers had approved, last Friday (12), the general strike after failing to reach a consensus with Sinetram for a 12% wage readjustment for workers in the sector.

At the end of today’s afternoon (16), Mayor David Almeida, called the president of the road workers union of Manaus, Givancir Oliveira, and asked the union director to suspend the strike for that moment, and they scheduled a meeting for the next Thursday.

“Mayor David Almeida called me, and asked that at this moment, our union leadership suspend the strike movement that would take place tomorrow. In view of the great prestige that the mayor has with us and with our category, we decided to comply with his request, we asked to meet tomorrow, but the mayor is scheduled to travel to Brasilia tonight, so we plan to meet next Thursday, 18/ 05. I make it very clear that I do not want to harm the users of public transport in our city, the strike is our last resort, and whenever there are ways to resolve our agendas in dialogue, we will, but if not, then we go on strike” said Givancir .

A new meeting was scheduled with representatives of workers’ and employers’ unions next Thursday (18), with the presence of the mayor and the CEO of the Municipal Institute of Urban Mobility (IMMU), Paulo Henrique Martins.

Manaus City Hall emphasizes its commitment to guarantee the full operation of passenger transport in the city. Dialogue and the search for consensual solutions are priorities in municipal management, aiming at the well-being of the population and the maintenance of essential services. The new round of negotiations represents an opportunity for all parties involved to find an understanding that meets the interests of both parties.
