Ciro breaks silence for 7 months, criticizes Lula and Bolsonaro – 05/12/2023 – Politics

After staying away from political debates since the defeat in the October election, former presidential candidate Ciro Gomes (PDT) resumed his critical tone of President Lula (PT) from the time of the campaign at an event this Friday (12) in Portugal.

In a lecture at the University of Lisbon, the former candidate, defeated in his fourth attempt to reach the Planalto, also attacked former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), whom he called an “imbecile”, an “absolutely unprepared” and a “vulgar little thief”.

At the event, Ciro criticized the spending ceiling and the fiscal framework proposed by the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), which he said was “completely handed over to bankers”, and said that the country no longer has a project for anything.

He also stated that the current president is responsible for what he called reactionaryism in the country, and that he is not committed to changing the country. He criticized the possible appointment of lawyer Cristiano Zanin to the STF (Federal Supreme Court) and the release of the amendments to the National Congress.

He also repeated statements from the campaign, such as regarding the annulment of Lula’s convictions by the Supreme Court, in 2021. was acquitted. Lula had the right to the presumption of innocence restored, it is different from being acquitted in a trial, why? Because he never had the due legal process, and I denounced it at the same time.”

Despite the statements, the former presidential candidate said that, unlike Bolsonaro, he can talk to the PT about Brazil’s problems. “With Lula, I go out for a beer to tell him all these truths. With Bolsonaro, I don’t go out”, he pointed out.

Ciro sold himself as a third-way option in the last election, but ended the first round in fourth place, with 3% of the valid votes. He was a harsh critic of Lula and the PT during last year’s election campaign, but he declared his timid support for the PT in the second round, saying he was “following the party’s guidelines”.

The PDT, today, includes the base of the current president, and has a ministry, that of Carlos Lupi, of Social Security.

On April 15, he made a public appearance during a PDT event in Ceará, when he restricted his speech to the local context and defended that José Sarto run again for mayor of the city in 2024.

On social media, he has not spoken out on federal government issues since the campaign.
