Since the beginning of the construction of the largest Catholic sculpture in the world – Christ the Protector – the city of Encantado (RS) has emerged as a reference in religious tourism. The visitation to the 43.5 meters high statue (with pedestal) that embraces the city of just over 24 thousand inhabitants has been full for over a year, even with the works in progress.
More than 150,000 people have already visited Morro das Antenas, where the structure is located. They are the ones who contribute financially to the progress of the work. The monument, as well as the surrounding complex, is being built exclusively with community resources and led by the Associação Amigos de Cristo de Encantado (AACE), a non-profit organization that, since the beginning, has provided financial resources for the project.
According to the mayor of Encantado, Jonas Calvi (PSDB), the city has major challenges ahead, especially from the inauguration of the Cristo Protector Complex, scheduled for November this year. In addition to the issue of infrastructure so that the city can support a contingent of 100,000 people expected from the inauguration, Calvi points out that qualified labor is one of the city’s major bottlenecks. “We have to change and make things work. The city with the largest statue of Christ in the world not so long ago did not even have a Secretariat of Tourism and a Tourism Board”, he stated. Today, the Municipal Council of Tourism (Comtur), aimed at consolidating partnerships and providing the involvement and commitment of the most varied socioeconomic sectors of the municipality in the promotion of tourist activity, is chaired by Glória Villa. “We know that we have many details to change. Encantado has already changed a lot, but the question of the qualification of the workforce is still a great difficulty, not only in the context of tourism. It is necessary that the business community perceive this new context of the city”, he said. , referring to sectors such as gastronomy, hotels and services.
In the field of tourism, the lack of tour guides, for example, began to be reversed with the launch of the Young Cultural Drivers Project, which aims to prepare 1st and 2nd year high school students to serve tourists.
