Chinese automaker BYD announced this Tuesday (4) the implementation of an industrial complex for the production of electric vehicles in Bahia. In addition to publicizing the partnership, which will bring an investment of BRL 3 billion to the region, the ceremony was marked by scenes of “chaotic energy” that characterizes civic, cultural and religious events in Salvador.

On a stage set up in front of Farol da Barra, a tourist spot in the city, BYD executives stole the show by dancing during a presentation by the groups Olodum, Ilê Aiyê, Didá and Afrocidade.

CEO of BYD for the Americas, Stella Li, risked a timid applause in the first few songs. But it didn’t take long for her to play the bass drum with Olodum and dance with a group of Bahian women on stage to songs like “Várias Queixas” and “Faraó”.

Tyler Lee, CEO of the automaker in Brazil, also risked a few steps on top of the stage alongside Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT).

The records of the executives interacting with the artists reverberated on social networks and amused Brazilian internet users. “And who doesn’t love Olodum?” commented one Twitter user. “Only Bahia has this power,” wrote another.

Residents and people walking on the edge of the Barra neighborhood joined the authorities to follow the presentations, which included the participation of a capoeira group and distribution of Senhor do Bonfim tapes.

The BYD Industrial Complex will be located in the city of Camaçari and will have the first electric car factory in Brazil. There is an ongoing negotiation for the factories to occupy the site where the former Ford industrial complex operated, which ended its activities in Bahia in January 2021.

The expectation is to produce around 150,000 electric vehicles per year, with a potential to reach 300,000.
