Chevrolet Silverado arrives in the country and joins the F-150 and RAM – 09/18/2023 – Eduardo Sodré
Soon, the trio of best-selling models in the United States will be on sale in Brazil. The first units of the Chevrolet Silverado pickup are on their way to the country, joining the equally giant Ford F-150 and RAM in different versions.
The GM Option has already gone on pre-sale, with a price of R$520,000 for the High Country option. The first batches are sold out, but deliveries will only take place between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024.
Silverado has been successful at events linked to agribusiness, such as Expointer, held in Esteio (RS) at the end of August. The brand took advantage of the fair to reinforce its presence in the utility vehicle segment, with options that include the compact Montana, the medium S-10 and the large Silverado.
Really big. It is 5.91 m long and has a wheelbase of 3.79 m, the largest in the segment. It is worth mentioning that the distance between the front and rear wheels alone is equivalent to the size of the old Chevrolet Celta.
The 5.3 V8 engine is associated with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which also powers the competing Ford F-150. In the case of the Silverado, GM says it has worked to increase efficiency and reduce gasoline consumption.
One of the features is DFM, an acronym for dynamic fuel management. The system understands the need for power and defines how many of the eight cylinders will be in activity.
But it is impossible to transform a vehicle of this size into something economical without the help of electrification. GM offers the hybrid Silverado and will have a 100% electric one in the American market, but has not yet confirmed the arrival of these options in Brazil.
To date, all large pickup trucks on sale in Brazil have a V8 engine, whether gasoline or diesel — as is the case with the 2500 and 3500 options in the RAM line, which require a category C license.
The Silverado falls into category B, the same as passenger cars. This possibility increased sales in the segment, which accounts for 50% of registrations in Brazil in the price range from R$450,000 to R$600,000, according to GM.
In other words, giant pickup trucks sell more than high-luxury sedans and sports coupes in the national market. The reason is in the countryside: these are premium agribusiness cars, commonly found in the Central-West region and in the interior of São Paulo.
To justify the price, GM placed all available items in its catalog on the Silverado High Country. All seats are ventilated and heated — including the rear ones, which accommodate three occupants well. There are also different temperature zones at the front and back.
The safety package includes six airbags, lane readers and an autonomous braking system. There is also OnStar, a monitoring system that can automatically call for help in the event of an accident.
The multimedia system’s screen is 12.3 inches and allows access to Google Built-in. The driver can access their account on the platform without having to pair their smartphone.
In the USA, both Silverado and its competitors have much simpler entry-level versions than those arriving in Brazil. These are work-oriented cars, which guarantee the maintenance of a high sales volume.
The market leader Ford F-150 had 654 thousand registrations in the American market in 2022, a calculation that includes even greater options for the F Series, with models that would be considered trucks in Brazil.
Silverado comes in second (513.4 thousand licenses), followed by the RAM line (468.3 thousand). Together, these 1.64 million units sold are equivalent to 77.4% of the entire Brazilian automotive market last year, including buses and trucks.
