Chamber inaugurates new deputies amid protests by bolsonaristas against Pacheco – 02/01/2023 – Politics

The Chamber of Deputies swore in this Wednesday morning (1st) deputies of the new legislature amid protests by Bolsonaristas against Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), candidate for re-election as President of the Senate, and in a ceremony that was attended by ministers of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

During the call for parliamentarians to take the oath to the regiment, bolsonaristas, among them the 03rd son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), held signs with the phrase “Pacheco Não”, in protest against the current president of Senate, supported by Lula.

They also pasted stickers with the phrase “Thief Out” on their backs. Of the 513 parliamentarians, 99 are from Bolsonaro’s PL—which becomes the largest bench in the House in the last 24 years. The federation that brings together the PT, of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the PV and the PC do B, in turn, will have 81 deputies.

During the inauguration of the deputies, outside the Chamber there are still long queues of guests waiting to enter the space.

Ministers from the Lula government are present at the plenary session, such as Carlos Lupi (Social Security), Marina Silva (Environment), Anielle Franco (Racial Equality), Paulo Teixeira (Agrarian Development) and Paulo Pimenta (Secom). Former parliamentarians were also present, such as the former president of the House Eduardo Cunha, who had his mandate revoked in 2016.

The need to build a robust base in the Chamber is of interest to any ruler. The quest for governability was sought throughout President Lula’s campaign. He managed to rally ten-party support for his candidacy in the first round under the guise of representing a broad front.

Already elected, he accommodated centrist parties, such as PSD, União Brasil and MDB, in his ministry, seeking to build his base in Congress. In this first month of government, the PT’s management has been negotiating second- and third-level positions with parties to accommodate politicians — the definitions, however, must be guided by the degree of adherence of the acronyms in the polls.

It is in the Chamber that possible impeachment proceedings begin and where most of the projects of interest to the Federal Executive begin to be processed.

Such as Sheet showed, the Congress that takes office should start work in line with the agenda defined by the Lula government.

In the economic area, priorities are the approval of the new fiscal anchor, which will replace the spending ceiling, and the tax reform.

In the political field, it will be the analysis of 27 provisional measures – 20 of which were edited by Bolsonaro. Among the themes of these measures are the one that sets the minimum wage at R$ 1,302, the one that maintains the Brazil Aid at R$ 600 and the one that extends the fuel exemption.

Proposals in response to the January 8 coup attacks will also be another topic that will have to be debated by Congress. This Wednesday’s ceremony takes place 24 days after the coup attack to invade the headquarters of the three Powers, in Brasília.

The Public Security Secretariat of the Federal District decided to close the Esplanada dos Ministérios and reinforce policing as of this Wednesday to avoid demonstrations during the reopening of work in Congress and the Judiciary.

The beginning of the Legislative year will take place with the inauguration of deputies and senators and the election of the Board of Directors of the Senate and the Chamber.
