Federal deputy Paulo Alexandre Barbosa (PSDB-SP), president of the Chamber’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Defense, sent a letter to Chancellor Mauro Vieira demanding measures regarding the arrest and expulsion of four Brazilian nuns by the regime of Nicaraguan Daniel Ortega.

In the document, the parliamentarian says he is concerned with the fact that the “repeated persecution” by the government of Nicaragua supposedly did not deserve any concrete action on the part of the Itamaraty.

Barbosa says that, as of June 7, the Ortega regime had forced 77 religious to leave the country, including the auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Managua, Silvio Báez.

“Several of them were arrested and kept incommunicado, without the Brazilian government having expressed itself,” he says. “Fundamental rights are being continuously violated in Nicaragua, while the Brazilian government refrains from condemning the current regime, including in the appropriate legal instances, such as the Human Rights Council of the United Nations”, criticizes the president of Credn.

“In view of the above, given the seriousness of the acts perpetrated against Brazilian nationals on Nicaraguan soil, I ask Your Excellency to adopt concrete measures to protect our citizens residing in that country, in addition to strongly condemning the repeated violations of human rights committed by the Nicaraguan dictatorial regime”, he adds.
