Chamber approves urgency that accelerates voting on Fake News PL – 04/25/2023 – Power

The Chamber of Deputies ignored the pressure from big techs and approved this Tuesday (25) the urgency of the bill that regulates social networks and imposes sanctions on platforms that do not remove from the air, up to 24 hours after a court decision, content that spread false information.
The urgency was approved by 238 to 192. An agreement made at a meeting of party leaders provides that the merits of the text will be voted on in plenary next Tuesday (2).
The mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), intended to vote on the request in a symbolic way, in which the individual votes of the deputies would not be computed. The aim was to prevent the application from being rejected. In April last year, the same application was defeated by just 8 votes – it received 249 votes in favor, but needed 257.
However, the leaders of the PL, Altineu Côrtes (RJ), of Solidarity, Aureo Ribeiro (RJ), and of Citizenship, Alex Manente (SP), asked that the votes be counted.
The text’s rapporteur, Orlando Silva (PC do B-SP), met this Tuesday with party leaders to hear suggestions. He intends to present a new opinion with the accepted points this Thursday (27).
