The Chamber plenary approved Resolution Project 116/23, authored by deputies Talíria Petrone (PSol-RJ) and Damião Feliciano (União Brasil-PB), and which creates the Black Bench in the legislative house. According to the proposal’s rapporteur, deputy Antonio Brito (PSD-BA), the Chamber has almost a quarter of parliamentarians who declare themselves black or mixed race: there are 31 and 91 deputies, respectively, in a total of 513 members.
Once formalized, the Black Bench gains the right to participate in the leaders’ meeting with the president of the Chamber, when the voting agenda is formulated; in addition, you will have five minutes a week to occupy the podium during Leadership Communications. As the creation of the new bench does not presuppose the creation of positions, advisories or use of specific physical spaces such as rooms, there will be no additional cost involved.
