Challenges and experiences of the primary sector in the Amazon are highlighted at the 26th Governors Forum – News of Brazil

The Government of Amapá is participating in the 26th Legal Amazon Governors Forum, which takes place from November 8th to 10th, in Manaus (AM). Among the various topics discussed for the Amazon and the Northern Region is the development of the primary sector, which involves agriculture and the Green Economy, the Harvest Plan and the National Program for Strengthening Family Agriculture (Pronaf).
“We are here to debate and welcome experiences about what is being done in the Amazon in terms of bioeconomy, family farming, technical assistance and investments in the rural sector in traditional communities. We can take it to Amapá and also leave our contribution and pass on what we are doing in relation to the programs in the new management of the State Government”, highlighted the Secretary of Rural Development (SDR), Kelson Vaz.
Within the primary sector, the promotion of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Ater) in the Legal Amazon, a federal program that improves production systems, mechanisms for accessing resources, services and income, in a sustainable manner, were also discussed within the primary sector.
Another action raised by participants from the rural sector was the combat and mitigation of moniliasis in cocoa, an aggressive fungus that affects plantations throughout Brazil. In Amapá, a survey of inspections carried out by the Government on rural properties confirmed that the state remains free of the pest, which affects cocoa and cupuaçu trees and can cause the loss of fruit.
The working group also reinforced the importance of maintaining dialogues on food systems in the context of climate change and its impacts on the Amazon; the Work Plan with Embrapa; Participation in the National Council for Sustainable Rural Development (Condraf) and the presentation of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture.
The technical meetings take place in Manaus until this Friday, 10th. In addition to agriculture, discussions also take place on the preservation of the Amazon region with the local population and traditional people as protagonists. Activities such as the Environment, Land Regularization, Public Security and Finance are recurring themes among debates during the Forum.
The event takes place at the Vasco-Vasques Convention Center, in Manaus. The program includes the participation of the governors of the states of Amapá, Maranhão, Amazonas, Acre, Rondônia, Roraima, Pará, Tocantins and Mato Grosso, which form the Legal Amazon.
About the Forum
The Interstate Consortium for Sustainable Development of the Legal Amazon, which has had legal status since 2019, is a joint initiative of the governors of the nine states that make up the Legal Amazon to create and boost sustainable development based on common policies and strategies.
The event also features 17 members of the Board of Directors of the Legal Amazon Consortium, 12 representatives from Legal Amazon Land Institutes and four members of the team from the Legal Amazon Interstate Consortium for Sustainable Development.
