The special adviser for international affairs of the Lula government, Celso Amorim, said this Wednesday (19) that “the world of free trade is over”. The former chancellor commented on the negotiation of the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. Amorim said that the agreement “is important, not only from an economic, commercial, but strategic point of view”. The statement was made in an interview with the newspaper The globe.
The special adviser defended that the agreement be reviewed, but without starting over from the beginning. The negotiation is expected to be completed by the end of the year. “Tolerance has to be there, because the world has changed. The world of free trade is no more. Take Biden’s speeches, total free trade, at least neoliberalism, the actions of the European Union,” said Amorim.
He criticized the terms described in the side-letter by the European Union, which demands environmental commitments from Mercosur countries to close the agreement. “There is a rejection of the terms of the side-letter by the Europeans, because it is very threat-based, not only the content, but the manner. The president has said that an agreement of this type cannot be based on mistrust, but on trust. You can’t make a deal that admits you’re going to get retaliated. It is an absurd thing”, said the ex-chancellor.
