They are also alternatives for those who don’t think about spending so much on the most advanced features of these brands’ most expensive models – the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Galaxy S24 Ultra, with more sophisticated cameras and a titanium finish. The Buying Guide tested the two devices that offer most of the features of their more expensive brothers, for a slightly more reasonable price. Both are the object of desire for many people, who want to know how they work and compare. Performance, battery, design and cameras were evaluated, in addition to the artificial intelligence features of the recently launched Galaxy S24. The iPhone 15 also has AI capabilities. But Apple still doesn’t say much about the topic. See the results of the evaluation below and, at the end, the conclusion and how the tests were carried out. Apple iPhone 15 The iPhone 15 is an Apple cell phone that takes excellent photos, has a very good screen and a battery that lasts a long time. The product was launched in Brazil at the end of September 2023. The device runs the iOS 17 operating system. Its main difference in relation to older iPhones is the adoption of the USB-C connector, which replaces the old Lightning standard. Any cable used to recharge most Android devices also works for the iPhone. The iPhone 15 with 128 GB of storage was sold in online stores in February for R$7,300. Apple still offers versions with 256 GB (R$8,100) and 512 GB (R$9,600). Samsung Galaxy S24 The Samsung Galaxy S24 is part of the brand’s new generation of cell phones, launched at the end of January. It takes great photos and has excellent battery life. The smartphone runs Android 14 system. The big news that Samsung offers in this line are the integrated artificial intelligence resources, some made by the brand itself and others developed in partnership with Google. These are interesting tricks to use, but they do not serve as the main factor when choosing a phone. At the beginning of February, the Galaxy S24 with 128 GB of storage was sold for R$5,400. Samsung also sells the device with 256 GB (R$6,500). Performance The iPhone 15 was faster than the Galaxy S24 in performance tests (read how they are done at the end). These tests evaluate the simulated use of the device on a daily basis. In any case, neither of them slowed down or crashed during use. It is worth noting that the use of some AI features on the Galaxy S24 takes longer to show its results – such as modifying photos, for example, or creating videos simulating the passage of time based on a photo. But it doesn’t crash. For games and videos, the Galaxy S24 was faster than the iPhone 15 in graphics performance tests – reaching twice the performance in one of the evaluations. In the test that compared the iPhone 14 to the Galaxy S23, the performance and video results were similar, with Apple being faster in one and Samsung in the other. Battery Both cell phones can spend a lot of time away from the socket. During testing, the Galaxy S24 reached 14h04 of use and the iPhone 15, 11h40. It is always worth highlighting that each person has a usage pattern and that, in practice, the cell phone will not run out of battery after this period. You can also activate energy saving mode on both devices, if necessary. Design Seen from the front and side, the Galaxy S24 and iPhone 15 are very similar, with an aluminum structure on the sides. The Samsung screen is 0.1 inch larger – 6.2” on the Galaxy, versus 6.1” on the Apple. The dimensions are almost the same – 147 x 70.6 x 7.6 mm (height x width x thickness) on the Galaxy versus 147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 mm on the iPhone. The Galaxy is a little lighter (167 grams) than its competitor (171 grams). The rear finish of both is made of glass, with the difference that the Samsung has three cameras and the iPhone, only two. In automatic configuration, Apple photos are 24 MP and Samsung photos are 12 MP. Comparing the photos side by side, a difference is visible. Photos from the Galaxy S24 are yellowish and “warm”. And those on the iPhone 15 tend to be more neutral. In selfies (both with 12 MP resolution), the opposite occurs: those on the iPhone 15 look more realistic than those on the Galaxy S24. In portraits, an interesting difference: the blurring of the cameras on both cell phones is excellent, separating the person/object being photographed from the background. The first, activated by touching the base of the screen, allows you to search on Google by circling words or images, with very quick results. Nothing that a search engine app wouldn’t do, with the ease of just scribbling on the screen and getting an almost immediate response. The second is integrated into the photo editor and complements some features that Samsung already offered, such as an “object eraser” in images. This editor uses AI to generate “chunks” of images. Simply select the resource, draw around the item to be modified, and move, enlarge, shrink, or even delete the item. Conclusion Despite not being the top of the line of their brands, the Galaxy S24 and iPhone 15 are very complete cell phones. They’re comfortable to hold, have large screens, excellent cameras, and don’t crash. Samsung’s AI may seem slow in some functions, but that’s how it is. And the batteries last a long time. Choosing between one or the other depends on what you already have on hand, be it an older iPhone or Android. If it’s a 2020 model or earlier, it might be worth upgrading to an iPhone 15 or Galaxy S24. If you opt for an older iPhone, find out which one to choose. How the tests were carried out For performance tests, three applications were used: PC Mark and 3D Mark, from UL Laboratories, and GeekBench 6, from Primate Labs. They simulate everyday smartphone tasks, such as image processing, text editing, battery life and web browsing, among others. These tests run on various platforms – such as Android, iOS, Windows and MacOS – and allow you to compare performance between them, creating a standard for this comparison. For battery tests, smartphone screens were calibrated to 70% brightness, to be able to run PC Mark. This is not always possible, as not all devices allow this fine adjustment. The tests were carried out with screens with the maximum refresh rate of each device (144 Hz on Motorola, 120 Hz on Realme and Samsung and 60 Hz on Apple). The battery was charged to 100% and the test ran for hours until it reached the end of the charge.
