The acting governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão (PP), confirmed the delegate of the Federal Police, Sandro Avelar, as the new secretary of Public Security. The announcement was made this Wednesday afternoon (25), at the Buriti Palace, during a press conference. DF security intervenor Ricardo Cappelli also participated in the announcement.

Avelar said he was invited to the position because of his “technical profile”. He stressed that he “absolutely” trusts the DF security forces. Public safety in the DF has been under federal intervention since the acts of vandalism at the headquarters of the Three Powers on the 8th of January. The measure is valid until the 31st of January. Avelar’s nomination was approved by the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, who followed the process.

Earlier, Dino warned that he does not intend to extend the intervention because there is no more constitutional cause for the measure. Avelar succeeds Anderson Torres, exonerated from office during acts of vandalism to the headquarters of the Three Powers and currently in prison.

Delegate of the Federal Police (PF) since 1999, Sandro Avelar commanded the Secretariat of Public Security of the DF from 2011 to 2014, during the government of Agnelo Queiroz. Within the PF, he led the fight against organized crime in the agency’s superintendence in the Federal District. He also worked at the Ministry of Justice, as director of the Federal Penitentiary System and president of the National Commission for Public Security of Ports, Terminals and Waterways (Conportos).
