CBF: New action in the STF tries to replace Ednaldo Rodrigues as president – News of Brazil

The PC do B (Communist Party of Brazil) sued the STF (Supreme Federal Court) against the decision of the Rio Court of Justice to remove the president of the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), Ednaldo Rodrigues, and call new elections within 30 working days.
The process was assigned to Minister Gilmar Mendes, who requested referral to the AGU (Attorney General’s Office) and PGR (Attorney General’s Office).
A similar action in the Supreme Court, proposed by another party, the PSD (Social Democratic Party), had already been denied last week by minister André Mendonça. In this case, the request had been made at the suggestion of Senator Otto Alencar, who like Ednaldo Rodrigues is from Bahia.
In the case of PC do B, the party’s entry into history is due to the call of the CBF general secretary who is away, Alcino Reis Rocha. He was previously affiliated with PC do B, was National Secretary of Football and Supporter Defense and held other positions in the Ministry of Sports, between 2006 and 2011, together with federal deputy Orlando Silva, from PC do B, then Minister of Sports. Both are Bahian.
Ednaldo Rodrigues was removed from the presidency of the CBF on December 7th, by decision of the Court of Justice of Rio. The president of the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice), José Perdiz de Jesus, was placed on an interim basis to convene, until January 25th , a new election.
Two names emerge as candidates: lawyer Flávio Zveiter, former director of the CBF and former president of the STJD, and Reinaldo Carneiro Bastos, president of the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF). Ednaldo Rodrigues tried to make a new candidacy viable, but was unable to obtain the necessary support.

The process that caused Ednaldo Rodrigues’ removal has been active since 2018, on the initiative of the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro, still referring to the election of Rogério Caboclo, Ednaldo’s predecessor.
The MP questions the confederation’s statute as being in disagreement with the Pelé Law because it provides different weights for clubs in voting to choose presidents. The directors of the 27 state federations have a weight of 3 in the vote, against a weight of 2 of the 20 clubs in Series A and a weight of 1 of the 20 in B.
In 2021, the court annulled the election of Rogério Caboclo and ordered an intervention in the CBF, appointing Rodolfo Landim, president of Flamengo, and Reinaldo Carneiro Bastos, as the interveners. This decision was revoked shortly afterwards.
The CBF and the Public Ministry reached an extrajudicial agreement and signed a Conduct Adjustment Term (TAC). In the new election, in 2022, Ednaldo Rodrigues, who was acting president, was elected for a full four-year term, until March 2026.
Gustavo Feijó, who was vice-president at the time of Caboclo, called the second instance. The request was that the TAC be annulled, and Ednaldo removed, claiming that the judge of first instance did not have the power to approve the document. This was what was accepted on December 7th by the TJ-RJ.
