This Tuesday, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) included punishments against racism in the General Competition Regulations. The entity inserted gradual penalties for cases of discrimination, such as a fine of BRL 500,000, loss of field command and loss of points in case of recurrence, in that order. The rules apply to all competitions organized by the CBF.
President Ednaldo Rodrigues was the one who indicated the loss of points in case of repetition of the crime. For him, sports punishments are important to raise awareness of clubs and fans. The decision to implement the measures in the regulations was taken without a team vote. The entity preferred to decide by itself, as it believed it faced resistance from the clubs to the new rules and penalties. Before there was no defined penalty for cases of racism, the new rules change this point in the regulation.
Currently, punishments for discrimination are applied by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD), based on article 243-G of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD). The maximum fine is R$100,000. The penalty provided for in this article is suspension of 5 to 10 games or 120 to 360 days.
Also this Tuesday, the Serie A clubs of the Brazilian Championship unanimously approved the increase in the limit of foreigners allowed for each match of the competition. Teams will now be able to use seven players from other countries instead of just five. The increase in foreigners comes in handy for clubs that frequently hire players from other markets, such as South America.
